Actually the title should be popular on the Social Network of your choice.
I understand what popular on the net means. You can rate (somewhat) your popularity online by ur site hits and page ranking. That's pretty much the best 2 tools. If people are talking about your project you are a hit.
Now here's the thing with YouTube and Myspace. First off let me just say anyone who calls themself a "Fellow YouTuber" is a loser. WTF is a YouTuber, is it the video makers or the commenters or the lurkers?
You make videos because you need to either unleash your creativity or unleash your ego. Or both I guess. But to call yourself a "youTuber" means you only make videos for the site. If the site didn't exist you would never make tehse videos. Your vids should never be hosted ANYWHERE else. Even making your own site to pimp your YT page is taking away from the YT experience and is traitorous.
But how do you call someone a popular "YouTuber"? Views, profile hits, bookmarks, embeds? I guess that may be the only ways to do it, but it's still iffy because (trust me) 95% of your views/hits are 1 and done. People who are curious and view your video once should all not count. And even out of those people more than half only saw 1 to 3 seconds.
Famous on YouTube is even less famous than being the star of the community theatre's big performances.
Now if you want to be even less famous than the MVP of Pop Warner football when you were 8... then be famous on Myspace.
In a land dominated by fake spam accounts "friends" currency is even less meaningless than Monopoly money (how much "less similie's" can I come up with?).
Tila Tequila, Colbie Ca...One Republik - Seriously I only know about them because they were billed as "being famous on the internet". I mean is that the nickname, the gimmick? It's like these ghetto ass rappers who never set foot in a recording studio 2 weeks ago rapping about how much bling they have and how much respect, following and how they are the best rapper of all time indicating that they come equipped with a huge catalog. You can't just SAY it and it's true.
I don't understand how these people are famous. Seriously how do you even build a following on Myspace? It's a collection of .. profile pages. People sit and wait for your oh so witty blogs? People clamor and anticipate your latest photos you upload? Even for music .. really now .. are there people who go looking for no name bands on Myspace and download their music and WAIT for new music. How do you guage your popularity? You can't say by "views" or "friends" because most people who are in your shoes don't get known by not pimping. So NONE of that can be counted. You aggressively asked or tricked people into experiencing your shit. That don't make a fan. The ONLY way I would ever count a stat is how many members added your song onto their page or downloaded from your Myspace. Even then how can you even call that success. You're better off singing at various subway stations for change and filming it and THEN putting That on your video page...or YouTube.
Then again wtf do I know? Cindy Margolis WAS the most downloaded woman on the internet, therefore the hottest woman and best actress on the planet, which is why she's so famous now for her work "offline" ... all because she said so.
Remember when all you had to do was worry about the reality of what is on the internet, now you have to worry about what is being sad ABOUT the internet.
Jace, whaddya have to say? "Le Sigh"
I thought so.
